Self-hosting a portal to send HUGE files securely
This week a client needed to send me a huge (many gigs!) compressed file. A quick search around the Web revealed lots of options, but none of them made me feel comfortable from a speed/cost/security standpoint. One of our pals in the 7MinSec Slack recommended transfer.zip, which looks like a phishing domain but (probably) isn’t.
Much like Password Pusher (which I looooove), transfer.zip offers both a commercial and free version of its service. Essentially, it lets you send/receive huge files using WebRTC, meaning “the files are streamed directly between peers and not stored anywhere in the process.”
This made it super simple to give my customer a unique URL, leave my browser tab open, and just wait for the massive transfer to finish. We then both closed our browser tabs and went along with our days. Easy peasy!

I got approved to use live video on Substack, so I’m going to give it a try tomorrow (Friday, April 11). I’m still a newb to Substack so I can’t say for sure, but I think if you’re subscribed to me you’ll get a push notification and can then jump into the live if you want!
This will just be a short session to test the bells/whistles of Substack, and then do a quick demo of the self-hosted transfer.zip described above.
